Preparations for Lab Tests
- Fasting: Defined as 10-12 hours of no eating. Patient can drink mineral water only.
- Urea Breath Test: Patient needs to be fasting on day of test, plus off from any antacid & antibiotic medications for 4 days.
- Urine Culture: Can be collected at home in a sterile cup. For best results, mid-stream urine (urinate a little outside the cup then inside) is best.
- Catecholamines/Metanephrine/Adrenaline:
- Urine 24 hour: Avoid chocolate, coffee, tea, bananas, citric fruits and vanilla 4-5 days prior to collection.
- Blood test: Same as above; in addition, fasting 10 hours needed.
- VMA & HIAA: A 24-hr urine test where patients must avoid the following foods for 48 hours: bananas, avocado, pineapple, plum, kiwi, grapefruit, tomatoes, nuts, eggplant.
Also avoid medications such as cough syrup, acetaminophen & aspirin.
